Catch If You Can > song book < "This demographic it's pornographic, this radio is a blizzard of static"
One of a handful of songs in the new collection written using an 'E-major' open tuning on the guitar, 'Catch' is the pop song of the collection. It does however have quite a dark and morbid poetic lyric subtext.
'The Falling Man' that the song relates to is an image that has been on my mind since the events of 9/11 unfolded through the media microscope, revealing as they did an image, a silhouette, of one of the WTC jumpers. This image was shown on the front page of newspapers around the world in the aftermath, only to be removed as it was seen by many to be in severe distaste and disrespect for someone, unidentified, who had taken the ultimate plunge when engulfed by sheer horror and desperation.
In the context of the song, The Falling Man has a snapshot of the modern world, symbolising the character who looks on it spins on at pace beneath and around him, taking him from life to death in almost an instant, hoping as he lives that love, or she who may catch him, will ultimately save him.
I am pretty sure that most people will not take this idea in this context from the song, and that for me brings satisfaction. I am never happier than when I take an image, a concept, and put it through the wordplay mixer, hoping that those who are listening find their own story, their own images, their own poetry.
