"Where you gonna go, when you run out of road,
are you heading for the coast, just a memory
with your ghost at the wheel, your ghost at the wheel?"
Stuttering home in traffic along the straight line of the A41 south of Chester, in the aftermath of a very upsetting day in my school work, I felt the car get gradually heavier, the pain dig deeper, the helplessness drawing me to the very end of the land to look out to sea, for something, just something ...
From the moment Matt Thelwell added a beautiful, soulful, harmonica to this track, I knew we had a winner, a true balled of most incredible passion. Thing is, from a simple open E tuning guitar vocal sitting, I wasn't totally convinced this song was more than a personal theraputic reflection. In fact I wasn't even totally convinced hearing Nino's string arrangement, and am ever the happy that I chose to give Matt the studio to play to the guitar vocal only. What happened next, adding the strings to the harmonica - which at first we didn't think was going to work - left us quite stunned as we played this back and sat totally lost for words.
Of course, we can't underestimate Rachel's outstanding vocal performance, and the careful caring contribution to detail that Nino provided along the way. |
