Darren Poyzer

Opening Paragraph

Darren Poyzer is a rare songwriting talent who manages to be as entertaining as he is inspirational. A singer and songwriter of many a poetic anthem and cutting edge love song, he has appeared at prestigeous theatres and festivals across the UK, both in his own right and opening up the show for artistes as diverse as Wishbone Ash, John Cooper Clarke, Eddi Reader and Toots And The Maytals.

Recently and Currently

He has in recent years been a popular performer at Belladrum Tartan Heart, The Acoustic Festival Of Britain and Buxton festival Fringe, and hosts his own open mic night in Stoke On Trent, honing his songwriting and stage presence as performer and compere.

He has also written and delivered three 'theatre-styled' music and film footage performance pieces titled 'The War To End All Wars', Protest Songs', and 'Bloody Love Songs'.

Starting Out

Originally from Manchester, Darren's career began in earnest in 1986 when he was offered a short 3 song set alongside poet Adrian Mitchell. A supportive environment saw him through this and subseqeuent follow-up opportunities, when he found himself performing regularly among others starting out at that time such as Steve Coogan, David Gray, John Bramwell (I Am Kloot), Caroline Ahearne, John Thomson, Mark Kermode and Henry Normal.

Giving Something Back

Even though he's moved on to better things, Darren still champions small community gatherings such as open mics and youth music projects. He also works in Special Needs settings, delivering accessible music activities and education.

Memorable Moments

Darren often quotes touring with cult poet John Cooper-Clarke as one of his career highs, taking opportunities to play to audiences that are not only quite lively, but sat in the comfy seat setting that allows a solo musician to be heard.

He's also taken to audiences in the US, twice venturing out of Austin, Texas for short tours, the first of which was interrupted by a hospital stay following a Black Widow Spider bite.

Career Ambitions and the Future

The days when an artiste of Darren's stature would sell CD's are probably over now, due to the rise of digital music distribution. However, Darren is one of those who sees the internet as providing a wonderful challenge. There are he says, many more opprtunities available now, than during the so-called halcyon days when he, like many of his peers, would chase record deals.

Darren Poyzer remains focussed and as ambitious as ever, and happy to be one of UK's genuine, independent, creative, happy go lucky, music mavericks.
