THE
MONTH THAT WAS ...
March
2003. Remembered as the month when, well, you know ... I for one started
to haemorrhage severe anger when the troops were ordered to go steaming
in. We've all made our minds up which side we are on I suppose, so it's
pointless debating this with those who see it differently. I look forward
to the return of things such as 'Keep Racism Out Of Football' when calling
someone of a darker skin colour is considered a Race crime by some of
the very same people who support the War On Iraq.
It
therefore brought a strangely subdued atmosphere in which to sing and
perform. First up, the Topic
Folk Club Bradford gig on the night that the bombing began and thankfully
human shield Karl Dallas was on the last plane home due to logistical
problems in Baghdad. He didn't make the gig, but I look forward to hearing
his news and views sometime soon. Another big positive on this night
was working with Jon Harvison (left), a pleasure, a really decent chap,
a great songwriter and performer. Check him out at www.drive-on.co.uk.
Thanks to John and all at Topic, see ya in October!
Other
notable gigs this month included Stamps in Crosby where it was nice
to perform a song with Jules
Reid, The Lux Club in Wigan (thanks Dylan), and a 'drop-in' spot
to share a little time with the impressive Scots chap Scott
Macdonald. Big on enjoyment and satisfaction were the gigs in Brighton
at The
Evening Star, and at the Spotlight
Acoustic Club gig in Oxford with the awesome San Fransisco hip hop
dude Lars Horris.
It was also wonderful to share both the London Anti-War rally and the
Oxford stage with my good friend of many years, Neil Axminster.
Two
drop-ins at two new Acoustica
nights in Manchester at Tmesis and Dukinfield's Astley Arms completed
the month. The rest of Poyzer's world spins on the follwing axis ...

POYZER.COM INTERACTIVE (Review)
Well, what a night that was. Rachel Bell and Andy Goddard
both had to pull out at the last minute for family reasons, Kirk
McElhinney had one of his transport tragedies and yet with Eliza
P stepping in at the last minute, we had a fine night. We could
have had a few more audience but anyone who promotes live music
knows the unpredictability that surrounds attendence figures.
I always look to see the positives however and the fact that people
travelled in from places such as Mansfield, Wakefield and Widnes
was wonderful.
And this was the occasion, thanks to Pod at Arc
Sounds, when I could try something new, just to give that solo guitar
thing a fresh edge. Using a projector and computer graphics, I devised
visual accompaniment for 9 songs. To say this was intriguing is an understatement
because whilst perfroming I couldn't keep my eyes off the graphics to
my right as they brought the songs to life. It's certainly a great idea
and one I'll pursue, but frankly speaking it would be nice if more people
took the chance to come out and give the idea a viewing.
Maggie
Hornby kindly summed up the event with a review:
"What promised to be a top pop acoustic occasion last night
at The Witchwood certainly was. Featuring songs from the acclaimed live
album 'Global', we got more Darren solo than we’d seen for a long
time and that’s no bad thing" - Read the FULL REVIEW

GLOBAL:
THE NEW LIVE ALBUM (Review)
It's here, and here's the first review, courtesy of John Togher from
Bang Yer 'Ead 'Ere Fanzine:
"As
a live performer Darren Poyzer is the brand new rock and roll.
Who says that rock and roll is all about sex and drugs, leather
jackets and haircuts? It’s about liberation, freedom, magic
and honesty, all of which you get on this CD ...
There’s
tragedy and comedy in his lyrics that most writers find difficult
to achieve ...
This
album seems to have captured everything that’s great about
a Darren Poyzer gig ...
That
chorus line (Beaches) is one of the most powerful I’ve ever
heard for its global impact and scope. A simple chord, a violin’s
curling melody and a voice. An honest voice. A voice that has
lived these times and carries them on his back, experienced and
ready to pass on and educate, open a few eyes and free a few minds"

HELLO
GARSWOOD AND MANCHESTER!
Yep, it's new gig time this week, first up it's The
Stag Hotel on Sat April 12th. The Stag Hotel is a neat place in Garswood,
between St Helens and Wigan. Andy Semp is the man, and I am on this
first gig welcoming people to come along and perform as they could well
get a gig here in the not too distant future.
Probable
appearances (no contract but we keep it flexible ;-) could well be made
on this occasion by the very wonderful Rendezvous
(left) and the magical Jules
Reid.
Then
on Thursday 17th it's a dp debut at Courtneys, on Deansgate, Manchester.
I'm on with two bands on this occasion, Die Pretty (full-on punk outfit
from Oxford on their first UK tour) and Red Mojo (blues-based indie
act from Warrington). Strangely for an acoustic perfromer I am last
on stage at about 11.15pm - a bit late but at least it gives me a chance
to perform a long decent set ... should be a challenge!
Finally,
another new venue, a one-off this one most likely, is The Queen Anne
in Openshaw for a Horizons Club Benefit Gig on Friday the 25th.

sets at Glossop Labour Club, followed by the return trip departing Glossop

Then, hot off the press, there's a top sorted gig on Saturday May 31st
with the one and only Nick Harper at Manchester University. Tickets
