TUITION
FOR SINGER SONGWRITERS (ACOUSTIC GUITAR)
I've now re-commenced personal tuition for singer songwriters, those
who are starting out or maybe those who wanna get back out there and
strut their acoustica talents. My newest protege is PHIL HANIFF and
you will see him on the songwriter circuit very soon.
Give
me a call on 07866 507441 or e-mail me at darren@poyzer.com
if you wanna develop and discuss your work ... I won't give this too
much of a big sell, as I guess tuition is merely an experienced opinion,
but I can say that people do benefit from this and my rates are very
reasonable indeed!

THE
MONTH THAT WAS APRIL 2003 ...
In
some ways it was a strange month - some real highs and one or two disappointments.
It was however the month noted most of all for an excellent one hour
show on BBC RADIO MERSEYSIDE that featured yours truly in conversation
to a backdrop of 6 tunes from the new live cd 'GLOBAL'. Entitled FOLK
SCENE and hosted by GEOFF SPEED, the show is a Sunday Evening at 7pm
must for your diaries, if you can reach the station on your radio dial
that is!
Live-wise
we started the month really well with the release of the Acoustica!
Mossley cd compilation, entitled 'THE BLAZING RAG' and featuring 16
tracks courtesy of people who play the monthly songwriters night. It
really was a fab night, it's a fab 'local' gig and the cd is ace, a
credit to all who feature on it and all who've made the night such a
great success.
One
of the people on the album is BUZZ HAWKINS (pic right) who is the creator
of THE BRADSHAWS. A quick mention for Buzz here because he's on tour
shortly promoting not only the new set of BRADSHAWS cd's, but also the
new Stereo Graffiti website at www.thebradshaws.biz.
Playing
my first headline gig at THE WORTLEY ARMS in Sheffield was wonderful,
a decent audience that was so inspirational and respectful, I was truly
moved by the experience. Big Thanks go to PICKLE who played support
and made the night a top pop success.
The
night after at The Witchwood amazingly had the small turnout,
even though people travelled in from as far as Widnes, Wakefield,
Blackburn and Mansfield to see my multimedia enhanced hometown
gig. Incredible that hardly any of the people who shared my ten
years as promoter at The Witchwood bothered to show - kinda puts
the local music scene in perspective really, having given so much
of my life to it, such an important return to my roots was greeted
with apathy from many I thought might have made the effort. Top
set on the night in support came from ELIZA P who is well funny
and well worth watching - remember where you heard it first, she's
gonna be in big demand very soon. The Witchwood venue is in fine
shape though, apart from the pa on the night which was poorly,
but nevertheless it still continues to be a happening live music
venue and is worthy of support.
Better
things for yours truly came at The Ballistic Acoustic event in Widnes,
a second Friday in the month gig at The Victoria on Ann St West. You
don't often shift 7 cd's at a songwriters night, but such was the response
that the new live album found new homes in one or two hi-fi's at that
end of the M62. Well worth seeing are a band who played that night called
GLASSCHILD,
check them out, they sure kick pop music's bottom!
Big
thanks to Andy Semp for having the big go at The Stag in Garswood. I
enjoyed playing the night and was joined by ANT O'BRIEN from the band
3 SIDED CIRCLE and JANE & PAUL from RENDEZVOUS. It was great to
get the chance to play about 90 minutes worth of songs, but maybe on
reflection when the 'locals' want Abba and Kylie, this is the kind of
hard work challenge you can do without. I guess you could say this gig
was a hard fought 3-3 draw away from home.
Playing
Courtneys in Manchester proved on this occasion to be a similar story.
The gig has a fine reputation, although when it's the Thursday before
Easter the attendence is going to be erratic. Playing the night with
a couple of excellent raucous guitar bands called DIE PRETTY from Oxford
and RED MOJO from Warrington, it was a shame seeing the suit and tie
and too much make-up brigade walking away from live music - today though,
it's all too familiar a scene. The nights there run weekly so let's
hope it keeps a regular cleintele.
Gig
of the month for me came at The Cavern on Easter Sunday daytime. A WIGAN
MUSIC COLLECTIVE all-dayer, with loads of stunning perfromances from
bands such as GUNPOWDER PLOT, MATT TURNER and ATOMIC HOUND DOG, I decided
to make the most of a big stage and a loud pa with a 'let loose' set
featuring all the pumped up acoustic anthems in the dp set ... it was
a corking good gig played as part of a corking good show! Back to earth
very quickly though, I dropped in on the all dayer at Cellar Vie in
Manchester. Usual Manchester gig - those who had played earlier had
all gone home, those who had stayed the course were in some cases, oblivious
to the proceedings. Thanks to the guys at LGFU for sticking me on, sorry
you didn't see me at my happiest ...
I
then made an un-planned appearance at The Ring O'Bells Folk Club, Widnes,
as I had originally been going to watch KIRK McELHINNEY. Sadly, Kirky
didn't make it so I got to play a few tunes to good friends, and make
a few new acquaintances. A totally acoustic gig with no pa, this is
a weekly night hosted by JEAN FINNEY and is always a pleasure to play.
The
Glossop Folk Train got me back on the rails - an interesting concept
whereby you play on the 18.52 train from Manchester to Glossop, then
do an hour set in Glossop Labour Club, and then play again on the 21.42
return to Manchester. Loved it! Special thanks to DAVID GORDON for songs
and ANNIE MARSH for poems, making the busy Labour Club spot into a full
blown and very enjoyable gig.
The
month ended with a pleasurable outing with Terry Day and The Heroes,
raising money for HORIZONS, a social group for disabled people in East
Manchester. On paper this looked like a 'mermaid gig' (fish out of water)
as the audience were well into their disco, but I guess this one was
a 2-1 away win with a late goal courtesy of a Monkees cover version.

Cheers
and Big Thanks for your love, enthusiasm and support,
Darren
Poyzer
