The Global Story
"This album seems to have captured everything that’s great about a Darren Poyzer gig" - John Togher, Bang - full review

A live concert was recorded and filmed at The Globe, Glossop, Derbyshire, England on February 1st 2003. That it actually came to produce a cd and a dvd though. was most unexpected, and it's a massive credit to all who took part that it turned out so well.

Rae Leeson, promoter at The Globe, had suggested a live recording by way of promoting the venue. I had every idea to do this to a high professional standard, however with the concert just 2 weeks away, it turned out that his 'in-house studio' would not be ready.

Not wishing to acquire yet again 'tape off the desk', I hired in a small company (some useless lad) from Ashton Under Lyne. With just two days notice, he pulled out and let me down.

An emergency call to Mark Tolle, who had produced my very first demo tape 15 years earlier and also worked on The Stone Roses '2nd Coming' album, brought himself and Paul Higham, complete with all the live studio gear, and the bonus of a couple of cameras, allowing us a little demo video footage.

I did at this point think that three good recordings and I'd be happy ...

In terms of the live line-up, that was also seemingly falling apart. Kirk McElhinney and I had been busking a few things at open mics, Andy Goddard was working away allowing no rehearsal time whatsover, and violinist Jamie Parkes called a few days before to say he had personal issues and would have to pull out.

In stepped Fluff. I sent her a cd and she came to Buxton to play a warm-up gig with just myself the night before.

Sound check on the night was incredible - I introduced Kirk to Andy, Fluff to Kirk, Andy to Fluff, and then we had a go at a couple of songs. It really was a not so clever sound check, and subsequently I wrote a set-list on the fly, and just called them up for whatever song they fancied having a go at.

The results are truly magical. There isn't a bum note in the show, and everyone plays with flair and imagination, adding a true sense of cutting live performance throughout.

It took us a while to sort out the audio, but back in his studio Mark Tolle really took to the task and brought out a superb audio mix.

Taking this away, it was about a year before I called Paul and Tolle, seeking some rough video footage for the website. Not only did they still have the whole concert, Tolle had mixed 'Beaches' and had been using the song as a video demo himself.

It took Paul and myself the best part of 2 months of spare time whenever we could find it to make a movie, filming some intros and ultimately deciding they were naff, so adding the worst bits to the comedy out-takes, which in themselves are a wonderful 'extra' surprise on the DVD.
